Contractors started 66 single-family homes in Lethbridge and area during the month, three times the number launched a year earlier. Meanwhile, the number of multiple-family units started this year — 24 by the end of February — is 50 per cent ahead of the same period last year. And it wasn’t just the mild weather that’s responsible for the spike, local builders say.
“This dramatic increase is due to weather conditions and consumer confidence in the market,” says Jean Greer McCarthy, president of the Canadian Home Builders’ Association in Lethbridge. But there’s more to come, she points out. “Lethbridge is forecasted to have a solid year, with a sustainable amount of growth in our starts.”
