CALGARY - Alberta employees saw their average weekly earnings rise by 3.6 per cent in March compared with a year ago — the third highest hike in the country, according to Statistics Canada.
The federal agency reported today that Saskatchewan and Newfoundland and Labrador were the only provinces to show a bigger year-over-year jump at 4.8 per cent.
Alberta led all provinces with average weekly earnings including overtime at $998.49.
Also in March the number of employees in the province rose to 1,729,500 from 1,726,600 the previous month.
Nationally, Statistics Canada said non-farm payroll employment rose by 30,100 in March, bringing total gains since the start of the upward trend in August 2009 to 115,700.
In March, average weekly earnings, including overtime, of non-farm payroll employees was $844.45, up 2.9 per cent from March 2009.
“In recent months, the pace of growth in average weekly earnings has accelerated,” said the federal agency.
